Finding good entertainment is often an arduous task, and usually
a gamble unless you’ve personally seen the musician, DJ or performer before.
And looking for that ‘just right’ DJ online can be equally difficult
just from the sheer number of search results you get when you type in ‘wedding
dj’ or ‘corporate entertainment’. So how
do you get to what you want—right now—and get the best deal?
Well, first of all, make a list as you search and give
the local entertainers a shot. Why? Because about 60% of the time, they’re just
as good or better than someone out of town, their fees are typically less
simply because you’re not paying hiked rates that include their travel
expenses. Second—when you do a Google search, do two types of searches—for example:
the type of music you want like ‘house music DJ’and then do one for house music
DJ (and add the city you’re in to get the locals) and search pages 1-4. Pages 1-2 gives you a good list of those that are
ranking higher, and pages 3-4 grabs some that are up and coming but might still
be more affordable. J
Once you have your list of at least 10, start narrowing
by the characteristics and details that are important to you. Obviously the
type of music offered is key. You’ll want to see what type of equipment they’re
bringing—you don’t want someone that doesn’t have everything or wants you to
provide part of it. The ‘self-contained performer’ is often better. Also, unless you’re planning at the last
minute and have to make it happen pronto, instead of going through a booking
agency, do try to do the search you search first. This is because booking
agents will charge 15-20% for fees and the entertainers often find a way to
increase their prices instead of taking the hit themselves. Result: you pay
more for the same entertainer you could have found on your own. No thank you!
Lastly, look for those that offer flat rates and the
ability to customize the song list or other entertainment to YOUR audience. It
makes no sense to pay for entertainment that isn’t going to be ‘entertaining’
to the type of guests you have at your wedding or event. And don’t pay for
consultations—the best DJ’s and other entertainers will work with you for free
to customize the show to your specifications and then knock it out of the park
when it’s show time.
